Alice Bah Kuhnke’s Call to Action Against Israel’s War Crimes
Alice Bah Kuhnke, former Minister of Culture and Democracy, is a prominent member of the National Executive of the Swedish Green Party, and the Vice-chair of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance in the European Parliament.
Throughout her career, Alice Kuhnke has been deeply engaged in numerous social, cultural, and humanitarian causes and governance oversight roles, including Fairtrade, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), the National Agency for Youth and Civil Society Affairs (MUCF), the Swedish Government Youth Delegation, the Church of Sweden’s Fund for Non-Violence, KFUK-KFUM (“Christian Association of Young Women and Young Men”), Skandia Ideas for Life (a foundation that aims to contribute to better health and increased security for children and young people), Save the Children, and Artists against Nazis.
In this speech, Alice Bah Kuhnke reiterates the devastating situation in Occupied Palestine and criticizes the nearly 6 months of inaction by the European Parliament. She begins by emphasizing the alarming timeline it took for the majority of European Parliament members to finally unite in demanding a permanent ceasefire, highlighting the staggering death toll and the stark holocaust warning issued by the International Court of Justice.
Kuhnke goes further to condemn the failure of humanity represented by this delayed response, suggesting that it reflects a systemic, dystopian crisis within society. She underscores the severity of the crisis by pointing out that children are not only dying from bombs but also from targeted starvation, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.
Kuhnke implores for a shift from mere rhetoric to concrete measures. Her call for action outlines specific steps that need to be taken urgently, including the cancellation of trade agreements with Israel, the imposition of a full arms embargo, and the exertion of maximum pressure on Israel to adhere to international law, and to work towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
